Marie Lee has published more than 6 novels and this latest one shows new facets of the author’s writing. Hailed by Oprah’s Book Club, with an excerpt on the site, Marie’s novel, The Evening Hero, puts the reader directly into the experiences of Dr. Yunman Kwak, A Korean immigrant doctor who thought he was living the American Dream, until he realized he wasn’t.

Marie Lee’s newest piece of fiction, a narrative about an immigrant pursuing the ever illusive American -Dream, it is also about the importance of where one has come from and how that informs who they are. Lee draws from her own experiences as a daughter of  North Korean immigrants who fled following the Korean War. Lee is one of the only journalists to travel back to North Korea as a Fulbright Scholar, on a trip with her mother.

Oprah has once again showcased Lee’s work on their site after initially including her work on the Spring List. Readers can now enjoy an exclusive excerpt of Lee’s work on Oprah’s site prior to downloading or reading the book.

The excerpt shared on Oprah begins, ““Old man,” said Young-ae to her husband. “What are you doing? At your age, Doctors without Borders? North Korea?”

Yungman is at a dinner he doesn’t want to be at, with people he doesn’t like who are putting down his ambitions and flaunting their wealth and importance. Eventually all the feelings he is holding inside bubble up and he leaves the dinner making a scene.
Lee’s work has awarded her many distinctions as an author including the Fulbright scholarship, and she is a New York Foundation of the Arts Fiction Fellow. Lee’s young adult novel Finding My Voice won the Young People’s Literature Award. The Evening Hero is published by Simon and Schuster and is available for purchase through Amazon,  your local bookshop, and more book retailers nationwide.
